Less than a month after it opened, the tallest tower in the world closed itself to visitors. We went up the Burj Khalifa (even though the signs still bore its original name, Burj Dubai) the day before it shut down indefinitely due to concerns of the elevator failing. Although there has been no official reason for the closing, newspapers all over the world picked up on the image of the 124 story elevator plunging down the tower of terror. We didnt notice anything strange in the Burjs elevator ride but once at the top of the Observation Deck, it was dusty and extremely windy. We felt the building sway and got motion sickness. To put that into perspective, the Sears Tower is a measly 442 m- the Burj is nearly twice as tall. The world's current tallest building in Tapei is only 452 m. The CN Tower, a tower and not a building with people in it, is only 553 m. The Petronius Platform rests on the ocean floor, and reaches only 610 m. Nothing on Earth made by humans reaches even close to the height of the Burj. Another way to think of it is that, each of those sections you see here would be the height of a medium skyscraper in their own right. Those cranes you see near the top are full-size cranes.

It shows the motor room with the classic otis floor selector and relays. Would be great to walk around that relay motor room with Dave (see 2:52 onwards). He commented to the camera crew..."I don't know how engrossed you want to get with this...". I would travel all the way from the UK to have an engrossed tour with him! About £300 a night. or 1600 UAE (Denum i think it was called) Very nice hotel and room. 2 bed rooms. 2 and half bathrooms, kitchen, laundry room, dining room and living room. Area is good. Middle of places, McDonald, Wagamama, TGI Fridays and super market near by (10min walk), Taxi close by 24/7. I don't recommend going to Dubai until January 2010. Most of the Buildings were still getting made such as Tallest building. Dubai Mall (largest in the world) was open but about 40% of the shops were still not opened. IMPOSSIBLE to travel around by walking or cycling. You have to take a car or Taxi since you can not cross the road. Monorail was still getting made.

Oh, wow. Apparently, in May, a Brit and a Frenchman snuck on to the under-construction Burj Dubai and BASE jumped from it at 650 meters up. Now, there's video available of their infiltration, jump and subsequent escape. The footage from up top and the jump is just incredible stuff. Although my favorite part of the video may be the footnote at the end; wait for it, it's worth it.
